Actually, the more customary way to start X from text mode is

 startx

I think that starts gnome by default.

The command is "startkde", but see if "startx" doesn't allow you to
use the desktop switcher to control which window manager comes up.

I think you have to recompile the kernel with NTFS enabled, and even
then it's not very safe unless it's mounted read-only.  I think it's
experimental.  Rick Stevens has a more comprehensive (and more
correct) answer.
