That can work, too, but if you ever want to duplicate CDs, it's best to have the CD reader and the CD writer on different busses unless you have a very fast system or a CD-R with a BIG buffer.

I've always been told not to mix CD's and Hard Drives on the same cable.
Don't know if that applies to DVD's but I would have built it with your
slaves swapped.

I have 5 IDE devices and 3 IDE slots. Is the configuration I have below a valid one? What might be a better solution?

Floppy connector - Floppy
IDE - Hard drive (master); DVD drive (slave)
IDE - CD-R/W (master); ZIP 250 (slave)
