I think that both devices on a channel run at the speed of the slowest device - so I always keep my cd/dvd/cdr drives and hard drives separate. Of course, the best solution (if you have a raid controller) is to have all of your devices on their own channel.
That can work, too, but if you ever want to duplicate CDs, it's best to have the CD reader and the CD writer on different busses unless you have a very fast system or a CD-R with a BIG buffer.

I've always been told not to mix CD's and Hard Drives on the same cable. Don't know if that applies to DVD's but I would have built it with your slaves swapped.

I have 5 IDE devices and 3 IDE slots. Is the configuration I have below a valid one? What might be a better solution?
Floppy connector - Floppy IDE - Hard drive (master); DVD drive (slave) IDE - CD-R/W (master); ZIP 250 (slave)
Thanks for your help.
