install problems - graphics

I am a linux newbie. I have just installed redhat 8
on a PII 333 with diamond stealth 64 video card and
daewoo monitor. The iso checksums were correct and
the media scan at the beginning of the install process
passed the disks.

I installed it with all the defaults, and the probed
choices for the video card and monitor (it picked a
generic S3 card rather than actual diamond card).
When I booted up, it got to loading firstboot and all
the text on screen went blue. The screen flashed a
few times and then gave me a blue screen with random
text on it. I pressed return a few times and got the
text login screen - still with blue text. I figured
the configuration of the graphics card was wrong and
xfree hadn't been able to start. I ran
redhat-configure-xfree86 but it was also unable to
start - even in the more basic mode that I believe it
tries.

I reinstalled and tried different configurations on
resolution and colour, using the actual diamond driver
and using the test function in the install program. I
didn't ever get a screen that said "if you can see
this then you configuration is working" so I assumed
none of them did - including 640 x 480 in 256 colours.
I skipped X configuration. I booted into the text
login - this time the text was white, and tried to run
redhat-configure-xfree86 with no prior configuration.
It still didn't work. All through the install process
the graphical installation screens worked perfectly.

Any ideas anyone?

Thank You
