Hi Peter,
could it be that the frequency of the monitor does not match that probed by the x configurator?
Maybe you can check the documentation of your monitor.
I faced this problem before but i am not too sure what happened but i tried adjusting the frequency range for the graphic card....be warned though, that a wrong frequency display mode could damage your monitor
