Reliable copy from a Gnome-terminal??

Seems simple enough. Why isn't it working tonight? Is it possible?

It seems that sometimes CTRL-Y will copy what's in a Gnome terminal window,
and then I can paste it into a file while in vi. Other times it seems it
will not.

What are the keystrokes for copying from a gnome-terminal and pasting into
vi?
