Karl,
This suggestion actually worked amazingly well. Thanks. I just switched
to the block on light yellow and everything is now nicely readable.

You might just try to change the default colors for gnome-terminal. I
always do that first when I install, or start a new user, so didn't
think of that. A background of white is sometimes too bright for the
yellows, so try gray.
