RE: recent install

Rick,
Thank you for once again posting this info. I was looking for it again
the other day and couldn't locate that last copy I save in my Rick Stevens
folder.

May I ask a question about this?

I've done a number of 7.3 installs lately playing with new alsa software.
When I run Xconfigurator in the install, but then tell it not to start in
graphics mode, I get id:3:initdefault. If I tell it to start in graphics
mode, then I get id:5. All of this is OK. So far... I think...

The question comes from this set of events. If I start the machine in
runlevel 3, login, and then type startx, I go into x windows just fine. When
I open an xterm and type runlevel, it tells me N 3.

My question is "Am I doing something wrong in terms of running programs
if I'm in X but in runlevel 3?"

   Does this make sense?

Thanks,
Mark

At the boot: prompt, enter "linux single" to enter single user mode.
Then edit /etc/inittab and change the line that reads:

	id:5:initdefault:

to read

	id:3:initdefault:

Then enter "exit". The system will come up in text mode. Make your
changes, then edit /etc/inittab again to change the line back. Then
enter "init 5" and the system will come up in graphic mode again.
