I don't know about that page. Does the model number above match your
camera?

Yes. The model is a PD1050. So your web page shows that it is not supported.

I'm going to return it and get the Logitech 4000.

Thanks for your help.

Rick B.

OK, I returned the Creative and picked up the Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000.

I plugged it in and xawtv brings up the webcam. But (there has to be a but), the image size is very small, I'm guessing at 176 x 144.

I downloaded and installed camstream. Even when I set it to 640 x 480, the image is always small (with extra grey space). According to the box and camstream, it should do 640 x 480 or at least something larger.

Camstream seems to know that the webcam is a Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000. It seems to have everything one would need to use the webcam.

Any ideas on how I can improve this? I include the output from camstream. It seems to see the request to change to 640 x 480 but it doesn't increase the video size.

The Quickcam Pro 4000 requires a later version of the pwc driver (V8.8 or later). Do a "modinfo pwc" to see which version you have.

You may also need the pcwx package (I used an old version). The package
is available at:

I don't see a version number:

[root dpc-2236 rpms]# /sbin/modinfo pwc
filename: /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/usb/pwc.o
description: "Philips USB webcam driver"
author: "Nemosoft Unv. <nemosoft smcc demon nl>"
license: "GPL"
parm: size string, description "Initial image size. One of sqcif, qsif, qcif, sif, cif, vga"
parm: fps int, description "Initial frames per second. Varies with model, useful range 5-30"
parm: fbufs int, description "Number of internal frame buffers to reserve"
parm: mbufs int, description "Number of external (mmap()ed) image buffers"
parm: trace int, description "For debugging purposes"
parm: power_save int, description "Turn power save feature in camera on or off"
parm: compression int, description "Preferred compression quality. Range 0 (uncompressed) to 3 (high compression)"
parm: leds int array (min = 2, max = 2), description "LED on,off time in milliseconds"
parm: dev_hint string array (min = 0, max = 10), description "Device node hints"

According to the pcw page, I guess I need to get the pwcx module.

That's your best bet. I used an old pwcx for mine, but that was on an ancient RH7.1 box with current software (2.4.20 kernel, et al). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Senior Systems Engineer rstevens vitalstream com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - "You think that's tough?
