sound problem

i have Mandrake 9.2 on my pc, all its ok, except that when i put a cd
into the cdrom or cdrw unit i can't hear any sound even when de cd
player its showing time elapsed for the current track.
I've check the sound cables for the cdrom and cdrw units and both are
connected correctly.
i can hear the system sounds, but i can't hear my music cds(burning and
originals)
