A wild guess but maybe something to look around for
before someone who really knows what they are talking about
to reply is.........file protections.

Check the files you edited of maybe recently changed
to make sure soomething is not "chmod 700" when it might
should be open to group/world.

I can't tell you where to start, but my /etc/X11/XF86Config
is:

[root scooby root]# ls -al /etc/X11/XF86Config
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root         3259 Jul 24 10:28 /etc/X11/XF86Config
