Steve,
   What are you on? Many of us are using corporate networks. Port
forwarding is left to IT people, if they allow it. A VPN is HOW we get
through the firewall legally via port 22.

   You might want to consider the tone of your next post, although I've
already written a rule that says I won't see it.
