There are several ways, so it depends on what you want to do. If, as
your subject states, you want to put the machine into text mode for
the long term, see
http://www.rhil.net/docs/faq.html#text_login
If you just want to get to a plain text console, you can get to one
with Ctrl-Alt-F1 for the first console, Ctrl-Alt-F2 for the second,
and so on through Ctrl-Alt-F6. To get back to the GUI, hit Alt-F7.
If you just want a terminal session, look through your menus to find
something like xterm or terminal window or similar.
