(you said newbie so please do
not be insulted) signal-11 is ALWAYS a hardware problem.
see
here: http://jamesthornton.com/linux/FAQ/sig11/text/ (Its
a text file)
Did you set the jumper(s) correctly for
Master/Slave? Where is your CDROM? (Master/Slave Pri/Sec
controller?)
Windows expects the first drive to be C:
(Pri/Mast) Usually the Cdrom is Pri/Slave.
An 80G drive is going to
use DMA (33/66/100/133) not PIO. The system may have to be put into PIO
mode to work with this fast drive. If you only have the one hard drive and
one CD then put them on seperate cables, both as Masters.
You may
have to tell the hard drive that it has a slave.
Look at the boot up
screen from the bios and see if you can spot which is where. In fact go
into the cmos and 'detect' the hard drives. I am not familiar with the
e-machine but mist bios'es let you do this.

shouldn't have done that. oh hell.
This makes no sense Linux will
fdisk the drive itself.
Remove the Linux CD from the drive. Go into
the cmos and find the drives. Boot up and see that they are detected The
system should hand because there is nothing to boot. This will let you read
the screen.
Once the drives are detected correctly put the CD in the
drive and reboot.
