Re: RedHat Signall 11 problem

hi mick, and everyone,

here's the latest in the saga of the emachine:

1. pulled out the new 256MB RAM card and replaced the original (we're back to 32MB SyncDRAM). gunned for a graphic install.
    RESULT:  error 2 reading header: cpio: black magic

2. linux text
    RESULT:
        Traceback (digest):
            import dispatch
            import read Packages
            import fsset
            import partitioning
            import raid
            import PartedUtils
            import Math
        Import Error: /usr/lib/python2.2/lib-dynload/MathModule.so: invalid ELF header

3. linux text noapic
    RESULT:
        Traceback (digest):
            import dispatch
            import readPackages
            import PKGTYPE_MANDATORY, PKGTYPE_DEFAULT
            import urllib2
            import unwrap, unquote, splittype, etc.
        Import Error: cannot import name unwrap

4. just for shits and giggles...another round of plain old "linux text"
    RESULT:
        Traceback (digest):
            import signal, traceback, string, isys, iutil, time
            import parted
        Import Error: /usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/partedmodule.so: invalid ELF header

and for even more fun, here's a few treats from the BIOS (AMIBIOS Setup (c)1999, American Megatrends Inc.):

and finaly, the report of the Detect IDE Utility:

I hope some of this info is helpful. I understand about a quarter of it's meanings and barely anything about the functions of all these acronyms.

I really want to get this thing running. Thank you SO SO much for your time.

AHA! that is probably the problem.
go here:
http://www.memtest86.com/
and download the dos version, make a floppy and boot it.

Let it run untill at least one complete pass is shown.
There should be NO errors at all

Linux works the hardware a lot harder that MS stuff.
You can actually QC a system by simply compiling a kernel.
If it works then the hardware is good.

Where did you get your CD's from?
When you booted the CD did you do the 'media check' on all 3?

Let me (and the list) know how its going.
