Thanks Rick,
Yes, I should have mentioned that I SEVERAL times sought to assign kde as the default desktop prior to login, as you sugggested, ("session"), but to no avail. I have undoubtedly screwed up the capability to switch by disabling gnome during the install.
This problem has probably never before arisen, because I guess most folks using RedHat/Fedora prefer USA gnome rather than European KDE. I figure, Linux is coming from Europe, not USA, so I prefer to stick with kde. Maybe a different distro implements things differently. I will try a couple of others, Debian and Mandrake this weekend, to see if I can improve my luck. Regards, Sol

Everything WORKS fine--sound card, printer, and ethernet, but Fedora, at least as I installed it, with gnome ostensibly eliminated, will neither permit me to configure the desktop as I wish nor offer ingress and egress gracefully as I desire. Perhaps I need to reinstall the whole operating system, and only remove gnome AFTER I have begged redhat to allow me to configure my computer the way I want? Why is it called fedora, it seems to me to be identical to my redhat 9.0, apart from a screen showing the word fedora for an unpleasantly long duration? One of my (many) error messages even stated explicitly: "red hat 9.0". regards, Sol
