The test ran on all memory.

Bob, we prefer bottom posting on this list.

Check Dell's website for updates to your BIOS. Dell has been notorious
for having memory issues with Linux and the problem is usually fixed
with a BIOS update.

I downloaded and ran the memtest-86 v3.0. It ran with no errors. When

it

fails when I don't put the option mem=384M I get the message similar to
this:
CODE: 0F B7 42 28 21 C1 66 89 4A 28 89 14 24 E8 6B C1 F6 FF EB 9C
KERNEL PANIC: FATAL EXCEPTION

Two of my lights on the keyboard will also blink and the only way to

restart

is to turn power off and then back on. Thanks in advance.

There's apparently a problem with the BIOS' handling of your high RAM. When you ran memtest86, did it test all of the RAM or only the first 384M? You might also check the Dell website and see if there's a BIOS update for that system.

I am trying to install RH 9.0 Professional workstation (purchased from

install unless I run linux mem=384M. I then change to LILO and add the
mem=384M as an option. I have never had to do this on versions I have
downloaded in the past. Then once I do get it loaded it will not

Bob,

What error do you get without the mem=384M option? If it is a signal 11
then you might have some bad ram above 384M. In this case try running
memtest86 from www.memtest86.com.

There are a collection of installation issues that may help at
http://www.rhil.net/docs/rhil-guide.html and there are some references
somewhere specifically on installing RedHat on a laptop (I don't have
one so I don't know the reference, a google search should reveal it).

Hope this helps

Chris
