That depends on what your PPP software is doing to the modem. It may
be sufficient to bring up the modem with minicom and give it these
commands:
atm0
at&w0
The first command turns off the speaker at all times. The second
command writes that configuration to memory so that whem other
software does an "atz" or "atz0" to reset the modem, it will be
configured with the speaker off.

Don't know about that one. It may depend on the window manager you
are using. A quick Google of "num lock linux" turned this up as the
third reference:
