Re: (OT ?) dsl modem

Greetings,

Having been forced into dsl support due to the local co being such
clowns, my experience has been:

1. If your not getting sync on the modem then the line IS NOT setup
for DSL. Period. End of issue.

2. Now it could be the dsl modem is for a different type of DSL. This
used to be a problem but not so much these days.

I would venture to guess that the dsl is not setup on your line.

I think they way it works is that the modem talks to the switch at the
telco office. Does not have anything to do with your ISP.

Can you tell me the modem of the dsl modem ? perhaps some docs for it
can be found.

I use an alcatel 1000 external modem myself. The manual for my modem
clearly states that if there is no sync, there is a physical line
problem between the modem and co office.

Anther test (though not as reliable) is to simply listen to the phone
line with a telephone. If dsl is running on the line you will hear
static. This is why dsl filters are needed on a line with dsl. These
days this is not always the case, some co's now filter at there end.
