Actually, the most common problems with that are a) your firewall
is preventing UDP packets from being returned, or b) you're not
running portmapper. portmapper can be a security risk, but once the
mount is completed, you can turn it off (as an NFS client, you only
need it to mount and dismount NFS volumes).
portmapper and other NFS-related programs will be started automatically
at boot time IF you have an NFS mount specified in your /etc/fstab (you
are an NFS client) OR if you have a valid /etc/exports file (you are an
NFS server).
If you're doing the mount by hand, you either have to manually run
portmapper or enable it via ntsysv (pre-RedHat 8.0) or
"redhat-config-services" (RedHat 8.0 and higher).
