Sounds like your linux firewall is configured to be too strict.
Have a look at
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-8.0-Manual/custom-guide/
Chapter 12 has the info you want. Note that the config tool does NOT
read your current configuration. It always comes up ready to set your
security level to "high".
