Because DHCP is not able to get me the IP either. When
I do ifup after ifdown, it comes back with the message

I know that the cable is good since I keep booting
into Win98 to confirm that. I get a steady connection
in Win98, so it is not as if the cable is
intermittenly faulty. Even the light on the card is
on.
I thought I will need to install some kind of dhcp
client for that first, which is why I kept it as
static. Now it is dynamic and it still does not help.
