Thanks about lokkit.

The firewall on my linux machine is off.

10.3.1.254 is indeed the corporate firewall / gateway
but it has been set to reply to pings. Besides I can't
ping other boxes on the same network either. I would
have said "bad cable", but the windows 98 installation
on teh same box can even surf the Internet with the
same setup (in addition to pinging 10.3.1.254, in case
you are wondering)
