Re: DHCP and HOST files

Thanks Rick, my question is more to my home network which now has everyone
on DHCP. Should I just get rid of the HOSTS-DOT files or do they still
function with everyone on the network using DHCP.

Again just a question for knowledge, not a problem.

Well, if you're trying to limit access from other machines on the DHCP'd network, be aware that the addresses from those systems might change if they get a new DHCP lease. If you're trying to protect the system from access from the outside, then I wouldn't change them.

All I'm trying to say is that the hosts-dot files permit or deny access
based on the remote system's IP address. If the remote systems are on
a DHCP network, their addresses can change whenever they get a new
lease from the DHCP server (either by a lease expiration or a reboot
or because someone decided to repump them).

I'm actually talking about the HOST series of files (HOSTS, HOSTS.DENY,
HOSTS.ACCEPT - I think those are the main names). I know without the

HOSTS

file I can't ping by computer name (on my home network). It also seems to
help out in other network things. In these files (HOSTS mainly) you put

in

the IP address, short name and complete name. Using DHCP the IP can

change

from boot to boot.

I was just wondering about the setup on these files. I just changed to

DHCP

and haven't noticed any problems, just trying to avoid some.

They're called the "hosts-dot" files ("hosts.allow", "hosts.deny", etc.)
and they specify external hosts to permit or deny access to. The fact
that YOU are on DHCP doesn't matter, as long as the remote hosts don't
change IPs.
