I'm a newbie, I have RH 8.0 installed. I'm having problems with my
integrated video (i845 chipset). I need to build a kernel (2.4.20).
# The Red Hat gcc 2.96 compiler subtree can also be used to build this
tree. You should ensure you use gcc-2.96-74 or later. gcc-2.96-54 will
not build the kernel correctly.
I have compat-gcc-7.3-2.96.110 on my Red Hat 8 system. Also
compat-gcc-c++, compat-libstd++ and compat-libstdc++-devel to match can be
helpfull.
Can't fix X without XFree86 install, can't install XFree86 without
2.4.20, can't install 2.4.20 cause gcc ain't right.... A few choice
cursewords are being thought just now. It's been a learning experience -
and it hasn't been fun so far.
So get a kernel-2.4.20 SRPM or a prebuild kernel-2.4.20 RPM.
Red Hat kernel build with the current system gcc, not compat-gcc.
I have 2.4.0-2.2, which also needs:
modutils>=2.4.21-1
initscripts>=5.83
mkinitrd>=3.4.32
I built them fro the SRPMS in rawhide a few weeks ago.
They might have some other requirements I forgot, but rebuilding from SRPM
gets around some.
