window manager suggestions/8.0

no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

I'm trying to find a light, fast window manager for my poor old laptop which 
currently has 8.0 on it, but no KDE or Gnome. I've tried enlightenment and 
fluxbox but it keeps kicking out this C error.

Am I putting the tarball in the wrong file? and, since this is a new one for 
me (I really don't like tarballs), how do I check for a C compiler?
