Thanks Nigel I have now entered this into the file. I have rebooted
and the option of "Windows" now appears, however, when selected the
screen goes black and then goes back to GRUB screen, i.e. it does
nothing!

I got the same result. I also had the advice of using the grub command line to enter the commands directly:

grub> rootnoverify (hd0,0)
grub> makeactive
grub> chainloader +1
grub> boot

I then get the message:

invalid boot.ini file
booting from C:\windows
missing file \windows\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
use original setup CD-ROM (select 'r' at first screen for repair)

Which CD, I don't have (since MS doesn't trust us with that kind of thing anymore, I suppose).

So- any thoughts?

cheers-
       Eric

I take this is 2k or XP? I think this means your registry is fubar, or at least Windows can't read it. It does require a repair disk to fix it, or a complete re-install. I've had to do this once and it's not nice.

Didn't your system come with any CD's? I'd have thought it would at least have had a repair CD.
