Subject: linux version (virgin, actually)
needs help installing rh8
1. i want to belatedly thank tom mui, thomas ward and greg julius for
responding to my plea for help. i was away for a while and couldn't get
back to tinkering with their suggestions for getting my monitor to work in gui
mode with rh8.
2. unfortunately i haven't been able to make it work thus far. using
the generic monitor settings get me, at best, snow and, at worst, "out of
range" messages. i can see the monitor during text mode install, and if
i try gui mode and then do a ctr-alt-backspace i can get to the command
line.
3. i went to the viewsonic site and got their official specs for the
vg171/171b monitor. the refresh rates given there are:
Fh:30-82 kHz
Fv:50-75 Hz
4. I got the following off the monitor itself:
Fh:64
Fv:60
5. When selecting the GENERIC monitor (at 1280x1024, which is what it is in
windoze), i get a default horizontal/vertical frequency range suggested by the
installation program. i have tried it using that AND using the
manufacturer's specs AND also using the values gotten off the
monitor. results: no dice. i have tried GENERIC monitors of
varying resolutions (e.g. 800x600, etc.) plus varying color depths (16-bit vs
24-bit). nada.
6. is anyone aware if there is a driver for this model of monitor that
doesn't come on the RH8 cd? alternatively, could anyone give me a
procedure that, once booted in text mode, one could edit the config
values and reboot to see what that does?
7. does any of this suggest that i'm having an issue with the video
card? i'm using the install-suggested geforce 3 generic card.
would i do better selecting leadtek as the card maker? i'm kind of
grasping here. any help would be appreciated.
8. separate but not quite related question: could anyone point me to
documentation that lists commands in linux, a brief description of where they
are located (directory-wise), what they do, and available
parameters? i can abstract certain commands one-by-one from various
threads on this list, but it would help to have something more systemmatic to
work from. thanks and apologies for the bonehead questions.![]()
