Re: startx problems

Hello Darios,

Yes I eventually did.

I have posted the answer on the xfree86 xfree86 org mailing list:
List-Post: <mailto:xfree86 XFree86 Org>
List-Subscribe: <http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86>,
        <mailto:xfree86-request XFree86 Org?subject=subscribe>
The archives are located at: <http://mail-archive.com/xfree86 xfree86 org>.

I also posted the answer in the redhat-install list:
Redhat-install-list redhat com
https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-install-list
The archives are located at:  https://listman.redhat.com/pipermail/redhat-install-list/

And I also posted the answer at the linuxnewbie forums (now called just linux).
look at www.justlinux.com - lots of good stuff in there.

I am currently monitoring the redhat install list only as the volume of mail otherwise is phenomenal.

Now for the direct answer:

I have installed Xfree86 with version 4.2.99.3 on my RH8.0 Server. However, the Xserver can't started normally. The screen is grey except   only a small top window on the right-bottom of the screen with the message "console log for 'myhostname' " , but there is nothing echoed while I input something on the keyboard.

Moreover when I run redhat-config-xfree86, I got the error message as the below:

Xconfig: Fatal IO error 2 (Connection reset by peer) on Xserver : 17.0.

The hardwares of my computer are:
                CPU: P4 2.4G
Board: Intel 845GBV with video card integrated

would you please give me some suggestion?
Hi,  I recently went through a lot of problems due to the 845G integrated chipset on my motherboard.

Have you installed the 2.4.19 or .20 kernel ?  This is available as a beta rpm in redhat's rawhide server, or you can download and build it from source at kernel.org.  The XFree86 4.2.99.3 has a requirement for that kernel related to the 845G chipset.

When I compiled the kernel, I used the .config file from the RH 8.0 install and ran make oldconfig on it.  I then pressed enter to every question asked to take the defaults for new entries.  I then had to remove CONFIG_SCSI_SIM710 in the .config file - comment it out like oldconfig did and keep a copy around for starting over.  This item caused a compile failure that I was unable to resolve, but I didn't need the thing anyway.  I set all of my CONFIG_AGP entries set to y along with CONFIG_DRM and CONFIG_DRM_NEW.  Make sure that the CONFIG_DRM_I380 = m because you will be replacing this module from the one built according to the instructions from the Dawes page.

David Dawes has a description of what to do to get the driver installed at http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/845driver.html It explains a lot of what was needed.

Good luck,

Additionally, make sure you get the manufacturers specifications for the Vertical and Horizontal refresh rates for both the Monitor and the Video (which is the intel 845G in this case).  Use the lower of the two sets of values (most restrictive) in your XF86Config file.

You may find these links interesting:

Hope this helps,
-g

P.S.  Please post to the RH install list for future questions.  There are far more knowledgeable folks up there than I.  Also use google and the archives mentioned above - they are invaluable.
