Did you try a text-mode install?  (At the boot: prompt, enter "linux
text".)  The GUI support in the install is usually less than the
full-blown XFree86.  My perusal of /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/Cards indicates
it's still supported, but apparently in a different way.
