I'm not familiar with the capabilities of the Netgear router, but I
would infer from the name that it has a firewall built in to it.
Check your docs or configuration to see.

Your Linux Firewall doesn't do content filtering such as email
viruses.  It just filters packets based on port number and source and
destination addresses.  Furthermore, your XP box is getting its mail
directly through the router, not from your Linux box.  It's a
co-inky-dink.
