I have the same DELL Dimension 8250, with that SB Live 5.1! card.

Beware, this is not the standard SB Live card! (it is an 'OEM' version,
type: CT0200)  That card will NOT accept driver EMU10K1, it has a
different chip set.

There is one (1) commercially available binary driver, it costs $35.  
I downloaded the demo version and got it working for playing games.
I haven't been able to play CD music, so far.

Now, the crazy thing about the situation is DELL does not install the
necessary cable to connect the CD drive to the sound card.  DELL simply
refuse to supply that cable!

I have sent 4 mails to DELL, claiming this cable. I even said I was
willing to PAY for it. They told me literally, that I can not have it!
The machine comes with WinXP, Sir! So it works fine through the IDE bus,
so you don't need that cable, Sir!

Additionally, DELL gave me the "advice" to reinstall Windows!  They have
no intention to support any other OS!

I answered that, being a 'free' customer, I am perfectly capable of
making that decision myself.  I told them I don't need support for
Windows, since I don't use it!

Needless to say I was FURIOUS; I also told them, I will NEVER buy
another DELL machine for the rest of my live.

If ever I find a solution, I would be happy to share it.
