Yes, you have to recompile the nVidia driver against the new kernel to make it work.
If X does not start you have to recompile in a text console.

I ran up2date and updated my kernel and many other packages. My system
boots to run level 3. When I start the new kernel startx will not
work. This may have something to do with the nvidia laptop video driver
I installed on the kernal before up2date ran. I think I read somewhere
that it had to be installed again against a kernel if it was upgraded.
So question is how can I startx using a generic laptaop display and
driver?
