Well, just thinking out lud:

You could use a NFS and mount it as a NFS. Also a smbmout could work...
that way you shouldn't even have to format the partition. Also a FTP
server could work... it depends on how you are planning to do the
backup, what kind of backup (incremental, historical, etc) what kind of
script you are running... and stuff like that.

Google for samba and NFS on linux...
