mq internal modem

HI,
installed RH7.3 on my PC. In kPPP, /dev/modem was not recognized.
Had to connect external modem to Serial 0. Then use the mknod
command to create /dev/modem.
Then it dialed out. But the external modem is 26K. Internal one
is 56K. 
how come /dev/modem did not get created during rh7.3 install with
the internal one?. Or maybe , i had to do "ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/modem"
afte the install was finished. "kudzu" returns no new devices.
