On a fresh install of RH9 on a laptop, I have no DNS over the dialup. Dialling and connecting is fine, and I can ping anywhere and get websites by IP, but DNS requests get no response. The kppp configuration is exactly the same as on another system that works. The connection is set to be the default gateway and to disable other DNS during the connection. Address, gateway, and name server IP's are all dynamic.
Either the dynamic DNS configuration is failing or there is a "ghost" DNS set somewhere that is hijacking DNS requests. Dynamic DNS setup is working with this ISP from several other systems with various diallers and operating systems, so I'm sure the problem is on the local system. I have looked in every place I can think of for a misconfiguration, but I have found nothing.
The only possible source of a misconfiguration was the presence of a PCMCIA ethernet card during the install which I failed to notice beforehand. I supplied no addresses for it during the installation. The card has been removed, and...
# ifdown eth0
# service network restart
followed by an lsmod just to be sure the driver is no longer loaded. eth0 is definitely down.
Is there a way to discover what (if any) IP the dialup connection is trying to use for DNS?
Any other diagnostic or fix ideas?
