gnome panel question

I'm running RedHat 8.0 with a dial-up connection. Is there some widget
I could put on the panel that indicates if my modem is active? The
Network Device Control applet takes up too much desktop space and
doesn't miniaturize to anything useful.
This is a terrific list! I learn new Linux lore every day just by
browsing the latest messages.
