Re: Routing and kppp headache on RH 9

I am going crazy. My kppp doesn't seem to want to set the default router.

Internal network
192.168.2.1-150 Actually only 4 systems
Linux router has address of 192.168.2.1

I have kppp set to act as the default router.
When the system dials in the local is xxx.xxx.xxx.174
The remote is xxx.xxx.xxx.10

I am using masquerading with the local network pointing to ppp0

When connected I can ping from any system including the fw/router/ppp host
192.168.2.1
192.168.2.x where x is any system on the local network
Xxx.xxx.xxx.174 local ppp address from ISP
Xxx.xxx.xxx.10 remote ppp address from ISP

I cannot ping anything outside of ISP. I get destination unreachable.

It is like I do not have a default route set or my ISP is stopping me. If I
connect any of the machines directly with dial up networking, everything
seems to work (except the fw/router/ppp host)

What am I do wrong. I do have the defaultrouter box checked in kppp.

I found the following information in
http://www.ibiblio.org/mdw/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO/x452.html.

Now I need a Linux expert or a pointer to go further. Anyone there?
What is the Linux NAG or Net 2/3. I will check the howtos

8.4. Default route not set

If pppd refuses to set up a default route, it is because (quite correctly)
it refuses to remove/replace an existing default route.

The usual reason that this error occurs is that some distributions set up a
default route via your Ethernet card as opposed to setting up a specific
network route.

See the Linux NAG and the Net2/3 HOWTOs for information on correctly setting
up your Ethernet card and associated routes.

An alternative to this is that your LAN uses a gateway/router already and
your routing table has been set up to point the default route at this.

Fixing up this last situation can require a fair bit of IP networking
knowledge and is beyond the scope of this HOWTO. It is suggested you obtain
some expert advice (via the news groups of from someone locally you can
ask).
