Installing NIC driver

I'm new to Linux, and it's making me feel like a complete idiot, even though I'm a power user of Windows stuff. When I install Linux, it doesn't recognize my network adapter. No problem -- I have a Linux driver for my adapter, so I'll just intall the driver manually, right? Wrong. In Linux, there appears to be no provision for "have disk" as in Windows wizards. If your network card isn't in list at time of installation, you appear to be SOL, if you know what I mean. Is there any way for a non-code-writing, non-Linux-geek type person to manually install a network adapter driver? It's a Broadcom 4400, resident on my Asus motherboard. Thanx.
