As in my advice to Michael, when it fails, use Alt-F2, Alt-F3, and
Alt-F4 to see if there are any interesting messages on those screens.
I started to write:
# Then boot with the CD in rescue mode and look at
# /mnt/sysinfo/root/install.log for other clues.
and then I saw the subject line indicating you are doing FTP. I think
you can boot the floppy to rescue mode. If not, download and boot
with Tom's Root/Boot
http://www.toms.net/rb/
Then mount your root (/) partition (example: /dev/hda1) and look at
the file:
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt
cat /mnt/root/install.log
