RE: Problem with Installing RH9 using FTP

Title: RE: Problem with Installing RH9 using FTP

Hi Bob,

I've look at the install.log after installation failure. The file contains only 2 sentences.

% start of file
Installing 214 packages

Installing glibc-common-2.3.2-11.9.
% end of file

I've also looked at the directory /var/tmp. There are 2 files: comps.rpm and glibc-common-2.3.2-11.9.i386.rpm. The file size of comps.rpm is correct but that of glibc-common rpm file is 0 bytes. I am not sure if it is normal because from my ftp server status, this glibc-common rpm has been transferred for about 63% before installation hangup.

For your information, my PC has only 2 small harddisks (~500 - 600M) and so my partitions are as follows.

/dev/hda1: mount as /boot for about 100M
/dev/hda2: swap for 64M
/dev/hda3: mount as / for about 3xxM
/dev/hdb1: mount as /usr for about 600M (i.e. whole harddisk).

Regards,
Yeung Ka Lok

As in my advice to Michael, when it fails, use Alt-F2, Alt-F3, and
Alt-F4 to see if there are any interesting messages on those screens.

I started to write:

# Then boot with the CD in rescue mode and look at
# /mnt/sysinfo/root/install.log for other clues.

and then I saw the subject line indicating you are doing FTP.  I think
you can boot the floppy to rescue mode.  If not, download and boot
with Tom's Root/Boot

http://www.toms.net/rb/

Then mount your root (/) partition (example: /dev/hda1) and look at
the file:

  mount /dev/hda1 /mnt
  cat /mnt/root/install.log

Cheers,
