Wrong. I have been doing this for a long time and it never trashes my access
file or my mailertable file or my virtusertable file when I don't use the ".db"
with the file name as you pointed.

What will trash the access the file is:

"makemap hash /etc/mail/access >/etc/mail/access" (Mark the '>')

Even in sendmail.org's site, there is an example that you don't have to give the
.db. Please check the end of the page:
http://www.sendmail.org/tips/relaying.html
