Adding a couple of things:

These cd's were purchased, not downloaded.

Toshiba 12X cdrom

boot: linux mediacheck passed on all the disks

boot: hda=nodma didn't help

tweaking pio in the bios didn't change it either.

bout time to try a different cdrom! unless someone has a different
idea
