Fonts in the Gimp

I have a bunch of true type fonts which I use in graphics that I do. I
have them working all just about every program except for The Gimp.

I have read the Redhat 9 Reference Guide's section on fonts and followed
it's instructions, but they still are not working in the gimp.

Anyone able to help me work it out?
