Bob,
Thanks a lot for your prompt and kind
advice.
When I did further exeperimenting by
'su ...', I found that the problem is not related
to 'root' user: su does not accept
_any_ user's pwd. (I can 'su' from within 'root' shell
without supplying any pwd, that guided
me to assume a root-only-related fault in first place)
In short: I can log in as any_user by
using initial gui login, but no user's pwd is valid when supplied
on
command line, e.g to 'su' command
(pls. don't assume caps_lock confusion et al)
I missed to mention, that I've installed
binary samba 3 (RH rpm) from Linux.org in my box.
(not available on RH network
yet.)
So far, I can work with my RH9 by using
graphically supplied 'root' credentials, anyway.
Kind regards,
Martti Pitkanen

Subject:
su root: 'incorrect password' /
RH 9
Hi,
After installing all sp:s for RH9, I came across a root authorization
problem:
As a regular user, I open 'Konsole - Super User Mode'. RH9 does not
accept root password. Anyway, I can boot as a 'root' without problem.
(runlevel 5)
After having booted as 'root', I 'su regular-user', in xterm window.
Then I 'su root' in the same windoe, which produces the above error,
i.e. I cannot return to 'root', even though I've booted as 'root'
originally.
Pls. see below the applicaple 'messages' -snippet:
