after fighting with the local phone co for three years, we are finally getting
a dsl connection.
would like some very badly needed advice.
1) i am getting one static ip and one dynamic ip. the static ip is for my
personal box that serves as the local file server, ftp server, web server. i
have NOT enabled telnet nor am i going to.
2) sendmail, procmail, fetchmail. any good FREE guides available for these.
3) since my machine is always on, i know that i will need a very tight
firewall. with several ports open, obvious ones are 80, 21, 110, 25, and
whatever yahoo uses. (i dont know this, but am thinking it is 80, but i am
not sure.) i will need to connect with ftp, www, and ssh to this machine
periodically. since i think my isp will be blocking those ports, how to
change those ports, specifically, ssh to something else at the command line.
4) any other pitfalls with pppoe that i am not aware of. any and all advise
would be appreciated.
tyche
btw: i still have my alcatel nic asdl modem that my gf wanted to give back
after the fight with phone co started.
