old OS/new hardware

I've seen hints of this before.  I have 2 distinct but possibly related 
prolems.

I'm trying to install rh 7.2 on a couple of new amd moxes, including one 
dual opteron.  my previous experience is 2-3 installs, also rh 7.2.

problem 1.  I'm not able to get X graphics workings, I believe because 
I've only got older video choices, and nothing that matches my hardware.

problem 2.  I'm unable to get my new boxes on the network.  I vaguely 
recall being presented with config questions in the install gui in 
previous installs.  not this time.  I've edited /etc/hosts, 
/etc/sysconfig/network, /etc/resolv.conf, etc.  I also manually created 
a /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file, since eth0 didn't seem 
to be found. might I also have an unrecognized, newish nic?
