When you connect the Linksys to the Cable Modem make sure you
turn them both off first and use the cable from the cable
company to connect the Linksys. Make sure you turn on the
cable modem first and allow it time to sync with the network.
Then, turn on the linksys router and allow it to initialize.
This should only take a couple of minutes for both combined.

Once you do that you should be able to bring up your web browser and
browse to 192.168.1.1. You should be asked for a username and password.
The password is admin without a username. Once in you should see the
WAN address from the cable company and the netmask, route, and DNS
information. If you do not see this information you need to make sure
you cables in plugged into the correct spots, etc.

By default the Linksys is setup to DHCP so you should not have to configure
anything there. If you have more than one PC on the network you should
make sure they ALL use DHCP to get addresses, if not you could run into
conflicts. If you have to use static IP addresses you need to review them
and make sure they are all 192.168.1.* and none conflict with each other.

After that is done, restart your linux server (or you could just rerequest
the DHCP address on the eth adapter). Then run the commanf ifconfig to see
your interfaces for the network and see if you have an address most likely
192.168.1.100 netmask 255.255.255.0 and you gateway being 192.168.1.1.

If that is all setup then you should be good to go. If you still cannot
browser the net you should review your cable company's connection. I know
TimeWarner does not do this but others (like ADSL from the pheon companies)
require a username and password for their network before they allow you
to browse the net. In that case you need to look at the configuration for
setting up the username and password on the linksys router.

Good Luck,
Dan
