man chmod
the directory has to be rwx for the owner and - for everyone else
my systems lists /home as
drwx------ alex
drwx------ pinky
drwxrwxrwx samba
drwx------ tyche
samba is writable by all users, it contains the files that are d/l'd from the
internet, alex, pinky, tyche are all users. NO ONE but the user and root can
get into those directories.
