dont think that there are any external winmodems, unless it is attached to the 
usb port.

if it is attached to com port, then you should likely use /dev/modem or ttySx 
where x is the com port the modem is attached to.

ps: also try looking on www.linmodems.org for the modem and see if it is 
listed
