Actually, I think I found it..  I'm running Ximian XD2 and they have a
volume control applet for the toolbar.  It seems that may be the
ticket..  That applet apparently doesn't do a whole lot with my sound
card (not sure why), but ...  It does cause those errors everytime I run
it by hand..  :)  Now I just need to figure out how to change the
settings associated with it so it works with my sound card ..  (Not that
it matters much, I'm just intrigued now)

No prob...  Worked through it, found the answer, adding it to the linux
knowledge base :)
